His touch was electric.
His eyes were magnetic.
His lips were a temptation....
But was he real?
After crashing her car on an empty highway, Shane is miraculously saved by Travis, a mysterious cowboy who walks out of nowhere. She is instantly attracted to him, and for the first time, she believes in “soul mates.” But Shane soon discovers that Travis is dead and that strict rules from the Underworld govern kindred spirits of different dimensions. Breaking these rules could destroy both their souls. And while Travis is almost impossible to resist, temptation proves to be the kindest enemy they encounter.

Can true love surpass the power of pure evil? Part love story, part supernatural thriller, this first book in the Kindred trilogy will leave readers lusting for more.

Review:

This book had a great start and I was sucked into the plot right from the beginning, it had a suspenseful start until... about 140pgs. in...
Shane crashes her car in the desert, and that's when her life changes forever. As she's basically on the brink of death, a boy comes out of nowhere and saves her. A mystery, in itself we learn this boy is not alive, no, he's dead. Having died at almost the same exact spot as where Shane crashes, we slowly learn what he is and the mystery that surrounds him, and what his goal is. Yes, he has a goal to get out of the realm he's forced to exsist in. Travis is basically a solid entity by day, but at night he becomes a ghostly, non-exsitant figure. Shane falls for Travis but doesn't realize what he is exactly, but slowly the mystery is unveiled and we learn all about Travis past. In that past, there was an evil villian who seeked revenge on Travis and his brother and now in this other life, he's once again seeking revenge. The best way to seek revenge is to of course hurt the ones you love, hence Shane will become the way this villian gets to Travis.

Now, there is so more to this story then what I'm going to elaborate,
I believe my interest started to wain, because it seemed
the story, had depth, and so much more potential, but I felt like the mark was missed within the second 1/2 of the story and for some reason it felt like the author had a hard time grasping the flow of the storyline. It seemed like her characters became less, and less interesting as the book went on, and the action and flow just seemed to slow down and actually became quite boring, until the end when things started to heat up, again. The characters love story seemed to be forced and lacking the spark to really enjoy them as a couple.
The ending seemed to peak my interest and I'm still on the fence over weather or not I'll be reading the next one. I actually felt like this book was written by two different people, and the middle was thrown together in haste.
The ending is a to-be-continued and abruptly ended...

Author Interview: Steve McHugh

So, today on my blog, I am interviewing, Author Steve McHugh writer of Crimes Against Magic. Let me just say I think this cover totally won me over and I will be reviewing this book soon.

Crimes Against Magic

Blurb - It’s been almost ten years since Nathan Garrett woke on a cold warehouse floor with nothing but a gun, a sword, and no idea of who he was or how he got there. His only clue … a piece of paper with his name on it. Since then, he’s discovered he’s a powerful sorcerer and has used his abilities to work as a thief for hire. But he’s never stopped hunting for his true identity, and those who erased his memory have never stopped hunting for him. When the barrier holding his past captive begins to crumble, Nathan swears to protect a young girl who is key to his enemy’s plans. But with his enemies closing in, and everyone he cares about becoming a target for their wrath, Nathan is forced to choose between the life he’s built for himself and the one buried deep inside him.

Crimes Against Magic is an Urban Fantasy set in modern day London with Historical flashbacks to early fifteenth century France. It’s the first in a series of books called the Hellequin Chronicles, which shows the life of sorcerer Nathan (Nate) Garrett.

Interview:

1) Tell me a little about yourself?

I'm originally from a small village in South-Yorkshire called Mexbrough, but we moved to Southhampton when I was young and I've lived here most of my thirty-two years.

I'm married with two young daughters, and a third on the way, which probabaly makes me sound insane, but the lack of sleep just means I get to write more.
Well that's the theory anyway.

Apart from writing,  I'm a big reader, especially comics. I'm also a big fan of anime and videogames. So, yeah basically I'm a geek

2) How did you come up with the idea for this book?

I’ve always loved mythology and history and magic, and wanted to do something that combined them. The character of Nate has been in my head for a long time, and the story sort of developed around him and the idea of what would happen if someone hated you so much that they’d do anything to get to you, but you couldn’t even remember them.

3) If your book is turned into a movie,
 (that would be awesome!) ;)
Who would you choose to play your characters?

That was a really hard question, because I hadn’t actually thought of anyone playing the characters before.

But after thinking for a while, I’d go with:

Holly (Nate’s partner in crime) – Natalie Dormer (from The Tudors and Game of Thrones)

A dark haired Jennifer Lawrence would be perfect for Dani. So long as she can do a British accent.

Nate is the hardest to decide, but maybe Michael Fassbender, he’s kind of kick-ass.

For the big bad guy, I wanted someone who could hold their own in a fight. Jeremy Renner would be pretty good, with Liev Schreiber as his henchman.

4) I see that your a comic book buff, so If you could be any character in a comic book, who would you be and why?
Wow, another tough one. The geek in me wants to pick something obscure and weird, but I’m honest, probably Iron man. He’s just so cool, and being that smart and that rich and having a job where you get to fly around in a suit of armour, shooting bad-guys with lasers. That doesn’t sound like a very bad life.

5) What are you reading right now?

I’m reading, Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins. So far I’m enjoying it. It’s a little slow to start, but I know it’s going to pick up.  I’ve just finished, Batman: The Black Mirror. Probably the creepiest comic I’ve read in years. Scott Snyder took horror elements and folded it into Batman. It turns out they make the perfect match.

6)
What’s next on your list of things to write?

The sequel to Crimes Against Magic: Born of Hatred. And then the third book: With Silent Screams.

Review:  A roller coaster ride filled with suspense and mystery around each turn.

I really liked this book. It was a different take on the paranormal YA genre. As you can see from the books synopsis it's about a sixteen year old girl, who's family is constantly moving and running. Running from whom, Jewel has no clue. All she knows is that her family is on their twenty-seventh move and she's holding her breath for number twenty-eight.
Arriving in yet another town and school, Jewel starts to slowly make friends, though she always has to be on guard. She finds two boys in her new school, who she could easily crush on. The easy going, likable, Chase, and the dark, mysterious, Roman.
Though, her attraction grows for Roman I had a hard time connecting them as a couple. You never knew which side Roman was truly on, so I guess my guard was always up in wondering if he was actually a good guy or a bad guy.
The book starts to heat up with wondering exactly who, and what Jewel actually is. As she learns more about the secrets her family have been carrying for years, Jewel finds her world turned upside down and inside out. Everything about her past has been a lie. As she slowly finds out what she is and why her family has been chased for years. She learns the only person she can trust is herself and maybe Roman, though he has an agenda.
This book was laden with twist and turns(hence, the comparison to a roller coaster). When you finally think you have it figured out the author will throw a curve ball in your direction and you'll be shocked and surprised. The ending was a action packed filled with surprise, after surprise.
Now, I'm not going to spoil the whole book for you just read it. There is so much more going on with this story, that you'll want to experience it without spoilers.
The author impressed me with her debut book, and I look forward to reading more from her.
4/5 stars

The Chosen (Blood and Brotherhood, #2)The Choosing (Blood and Brotherhood, #1)

The Birth of The Blood and Brotherhood Saga.

I grew up reading fantasy novels like so many other children do and found them inspiring, each of them lighting a fire in my imagination I longed to keep burning forever.  The people and places you visit between the covers of a good book have always been an escape for me and to this day I read fantasy novels more often then not.  I have read more fantasy books than I dare to count, however if I were to guess I would say no less than two thousand or so books.  As I read I often wonder about things within the books that are often not explained.  As a staple of nearly all fantasy books magic is a prevalent theme, yet often the source of the magic is obscure.  The reason for the magic is left unexplained.  The consequences of using magic too is often left out, and all these things I ponder whilst I read.

I began writing The Blood & Brotherhood Saga several years ago as the story had been playing out in my head for what seemed like an eternity.  I knew the story as if I had witnessed it myself.  I knew the characters as if we had regular meals together and spoke frequently.  I knew the world they lived upon, as I had created it with my own imagination leaving no detail, reason, or consequence obscure.  I wanted to create for readers a fantasy experience that left no questions unanswered.  I did not want to use the "because there just was" logic to magic.  Everything had to have a reason and a source.  Everything needed to be woven precisely leaving no holes in the story.  Everything had to create a cycle of sorts, tying in all reasoning's and logic into the story to make it more believable than any other fantasy world I had ever visited.  Thus I created Thurr.

Imagine if you will, a world created by many gods each equally powerful, each of them working towards the same goals.  All of the gods give from themselves an equal portion of the life force that sustains them to create the world and all life upon it.  As the world flourishes, as civilizations grow and prosper the gods watch.  As the peoples of Thurr grow in population and expand territories are created and disputes lead to battles and wars.  As the peoples upon the world perish, the life gifted to them returns to the gods.  The gods watch and study their creations and begin to realize that the lives they have made are complex and show attributes and traits that are unknown and unexpected by the gods.  Out of want of these experiences and attributes the gods decide to walk among the races of mankind, hiding in the flesh of mortals.  All the lessons of man are learned in secret, before returning to the immortal plane, but one god learns something unexpected and she uses the knowledge to her advantage.

Becoming more powerful than any one of the other gods through the use of her secret the goddess attempts to subvert her peers, but she is not powerful enough.  Detained in the plane of the immortals the goddess must watch as her peers return to Thurr to reveal themselves to the races of men.  Once there, the gods create champions among men, lending them more life power and great abilities.  Wars among the races of men erupt across the face of the world as nearly all of the goddess' followers are slain, yet as each of them dies her power grows.  However she is bound to the world of Thurr, and being detained she can gain no more followers, and as the other gods' followings flourish over centuries, her power wanes having no more followers.  Once again all of the gods are equals save the goddess who betrayed them.  To keep their equality however the gods keep champions upon Thurr to provide balance.

The goddess who betrayed her peers finds a flaw in the other gods' thinking and decides to create a champion of her own, but weakened as she is, she cannot sustain a champion on her own.  Thus she makes a pact with a mortal, to him unlimited magical power, but the power has a price and a burden.

Imagine yourself in a world where there are many gods you can chose to serve.  Though you do not have to serve any of them, by serving one you might be blessed with great powers or abilities.  For you the sacrifice is minuscule, in fact you will not notice the price you pay for the power at all when serving most of the gods.  What if you were not inclined to serve a god though?  What if you did not trust the gods?  What if you found yourself again and again in impossible situations where the only viable solution seems to be service to a god?  What if that god promised to help you?  What if they offered you unlimited magical power unlike anything ever seen before upon the face of the world?  What if you could become the most powerful, most feared person to walk the earth?  What would you sacrifice?  What would you give?  Would you care where the power came from?  What would you do with it?

You need to visit Thurr.  Take a journey with Seth and Garret and see what paths they choose.  What you find will be sure to surprise you.  What story would be complete without a strong woman you may ask?  None!  That is why you might like to get to know Sara, she is entirely too mischievous for her own good, but who doesn't like a naughty girl?  Meet the gods, meet those who worship them, meet the champions of Thurr, and witness the birth of Vampires and Werewolves unlike you have ever before imagined.

Review: First Grave On The Right by Darynda Jones Narrated by Lorelei King

First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1)

Author:

Audio CD, 9 pages

Published February 1st 2011 by Macmillan Audio
ISBN 1427211302 (ISBN13: 9781427211309)
Book Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Series Charley Davidson #1
Paranormal Romance, Urban Fantasy
Borrowed from Library

Charley sees dead people. That’s right, she sees dead people. And it’s her job to convince them to “go into the light.” But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e. murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she’s been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. This is a thrilling debut novel from an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense

Review :
This story is laden with humor and wit. The audio version was done well and I enjoyed listening to Lorelei play out each character and give her unique spin on them.

Charley Davidson a PI full of snarkiness, humor, and oh, she can see dead people. Charley helps the dead pass to the other side, she's a grim reaper. Her world is filled with ghosts, acting as their voice in the living world. She basically is ravaged with mindless request and deals with  the wayward ghost or two. But, that's not all she does, she solves mysteries, She’s a part time PI, an Albuquerque Police Department consultant who helps her uncle solve murders, and does a pretty good job at it, with the help of her circle of friends, relatives, and the occasional ghosts.
Her world is basically built upon her being a medium and solving mysteries.
The love interest in this book is the biggest mystery for Charley to solve.
Reyes, your every girls fantasy. If you love a dark, powerful, mysterious, savior, that just so happens to be seductive, and wicked good in bed, he's your man! Hmm.. Where, oh where can I get me a Reyes.

"The shadow moved, disintegrated, disappeared, and reappeared before me in the same instant. Then it was my turn to retreat. I stumbled back as a long tendril of smoke raised, and suddenly an arm was braced against the wall beside my head. [...] His mouth brushed my ear, sending shivers down my spine. “Dutch,” he whispered, and I melted into him. [...] Then his mouth covered mine and I lost all sense of reality. My world took his form, became his body, his mouth, his hands, skimming over me, surveying the hills and valleys of all that was me, his moon. His very own satellite seduced into his orbit by the sheer will of his gravity."

My version of Reyes

So good, right?
Reyes has saved Charley's life since the day she was born, as he is unique and carries his own aura of mystery. Now, I'm not going to spoil what or whom Reyes is, just think of him as a sexy hero, with paranormal powers.

This book was full of humor and one liners. I'm sharing a few with you below. Enjoy! I know I did.

Quotes
“Where you just possessed?" Cookie asked after a long moment, awe softening her voice. "'Cause let me tell you, sweetheart, if that was possession, I'm selling my soul.”
“Genius has its limitations.
Insanity...not so much" -Bumper Sticker”
"It isn’t the fall that will kill you, but the sudden stop.”

“That took balls."
"Please," I said with a snort, "that took ovaries. Of which I have
two.”

4.5/5 Stars

Review of Audio:  Excellent Audio Narrator!
Lorelei King narrated this audio version of the book, and I must say she was an excellent choice! She had snark, seduction, and a sultry tone.
To this day her voice rings out in my head whenever I think of Miss Jones book, or read any of the quotes from this book. Every time I read a bumper sticker or t-shirt, I think about this book and Miss King's narration. I loved her playing the voice of Charley and Cookie. She made them come alive as well as the other characters in this book, portraying each one in a unique voice.
*I only hope she will continue with the series, as I really cannot see anyone else replacing her.
