An emotional love affair riddled with angst, mental illness, pain and more!

Maggie an only child with great parents, she does well in school, has great friends, and is trying to enjoy high school.
Clay is the mysterious new kid, he comes from well to do parents who are involved in politics. Having a difficult time dealing with their sons mental issues, he moves in with his Aunt as he tries to get a gripe on his life. His mental issues include having  Bi-Polar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, and issues with Cutting. He's basically a walking time bomb who seems to fly off the handle at times. At first Maggie sees this mysterious boy and she likes him, not knowing what lies under his sweet exterior. They have a strange friendship at first. He gets close to her, only to push her away. He doesn't want to get involved with her, and he seems to keep people at bay.

Eventually, these two do manage to get together, and that's were the illness seems to rear it's ugly head. As Clay periodically stops taking his meds. he becomes sucked into his illness, and Maggie wants to save him, and be there for him. When an unexpected visit from his parents ends up being a major deal. Clay wants to leave with Maggie, but running away together doesn't solve the ongoing issue that Clay deals with, and slowly Clay is starting to get worse, and Maggie is the only one that can save him, or get into a worse situation that puts her at risk.

This book was intense at times. Writing about mental illness is a difficult feat,  and I thought the author did well in reflecting the highs and lows of the intensity of the disease. It focused on more than the disease, it also was about the relationship, a relationship with no boundaries. A relationship of love, and looking past the problems these two faced. I thought Maggie really put herself out there for Clay. She really try's to be his saving grace, but she's young and naïve at times, and puts everything and everyone that loves her in the backseat to her relationship. She starts to change, and becomes defensive at times, with her parents, friends, and anyone that utters a mean word about Clay. These two did have a tender, loving relationship at times, but most of it was a rollercoaster, and intense. I think this book should be read by adults, especially parents to teens, if there wasn't sex in the book I would definitely recommend it to teens 16 and up. It serves as a great lesson, as more than just a romance book, to me it opened my eyes to the disease's and what many people suffer with day to day.

I know I spoke about the intensity of this book, but it did have tender moments and it did have a few sexual situations.  I just think I had a tough time with falling for Clay, I think if he took care of his problems, he and Maggie could have a shot at love together. This is not your typical  happy ending romance, and I hope the next book shows a healing side of their romance.

4/5

“I love you. You are my life.” he placed my hand over his heart. I could feel it beating erratically beneath my palm. “Feel that? It’s yours. For now and always!”

"The holes would close up. The ripping seams would come together. But I would never be as I was before. Before him, My crazy beautiful love."

“And if he went into the dark again, this time I would be there to find him – to follow him. Because I thought, perhaps quite immeasurable that my love could help him. Maybe our love could even do more than just help – maybe it could heal him. Fix him. Fix everything.”

  1. I really wanted to read this after an excerpt but then I did see a review that said it was a real tear jerker which isn't really my thing. Mental health issues are so hard to read about and I can only imagine the heart ache. Hopefully the next one does have a bit of and uplift and healing.

  2. Great review. Mental health issues are sometimes to read about, but this sounds like it was handled well.

  3. I'd be good with the mental illness and dark nature of the book, but what scares me is that I think another book I read by this author had a giant cliffhanger. :( In an angsty book like this, that would break my heart - it sounds like there's not a happily ever after, but there'll be a continuation?

Those are three gorgeous quotes - love them!

  5. Glad you enjoyed this one. And I hope poor Clay works on getting a handle on his illness before getting into a relationship. (Yes, I am giving advice to fictional characters...)

  6. THis does sound like a very intense read. I empathize with Clay because I deal with depression and have cut before. Poor Maggie, loving but swept up in all of that.

  10. I reviewed this book on my blog, Reviewing Romance, and I am always curious to read other reviews about it. While I didn't think it was a bad book, I thought it was way too sexual, like you said, to almost feel Young Adult-ish, but then the characters are 16/17 years old... I felt kind of pervy ready it. Did you get this feeling at all.

    Best Wishes...
