The Star Child

The Star Child

Published September 21st 2012 by Inkspell Publishing

ISBN: 139780985656249.

The world is about to be cloaked in darkness. Only one can stop the night.

Kellen St. James has spent his entire life being overlooked as an unwanted, ordinary, slightly geeky kid. That is until a beautiful girl, one who has haunted his dreams for the past eleven years of his life, shows up spinning tales of a prophecy. Not just any old prophecy either, but one in which Kellen plays a key role.

Suddenly, Kellen finds himself on the run through a Celtic underworld of faeries and demons, angels and gods, not to mention a really ticked off pack of hellhounds, all in order to save the world from darkness. But will they make it in time?

Stephanie Keyes holds an undergraduate degree in Management Information Systems as well as a Master’s in Education. A seasoned, facilitator, Mrs. Keyes worked in Training and Development for an international telecommunications corporation for twelve years; spending the first eight years of her career as a Software Trainer and Technical Writer and the last four working in Human Resources and Employee Development.

In May of 2012, Mrs.Keyes left the corporate world to focus on her family and her writing full-time. She also operates a freelance graphic and instructional design business, Sycamore Road Design.

Inkspell Publishing will release her first novel, The Star Child, on September 21, 2012. She is now currently at work on the second book in The Star Child Trilogy, The Fallen Stars.

Keyes lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two children, and Riley the dog.

Kellen, are male lead protagonist, is a smart, college educated 17 yr.old! Yes, 17 and already a college graduate, so you already know he is super smart! That really doesn't change the fact that he has no support from his family, his mother died, his father is not the greatest, and he can't explain his recurring dreams, that he  has been having for years.

Kellan decides to set off to Ireland, to his recently deceased grandmother's home as he is drawn to the country via his dreams, and a girl who seems to always appear in them.

Caliente, the girl in his dreams, shows Kellan there is more to his dreams and introduces him to another world.
A world unlike ours, filled with creatures. These creatures include Faires, Gods, demons, gargoyles, and many more...

Kellan must fill a prophecy, along with the help of Caliente their journey embarks them over the land fighting the "evils" of this "other" world.

The Star Child was a good read, although slow at times the pace did pick up as the adventure was played out and the action rivets up as these two journey across the "other world". I would recommend this book to Fantasy, epic readers, but I would keep it under the middle grade genre.

4/5 Stars -

InkSpell Publishing is giving away an
Autographed Paperback copy of The Star Child,
5 ebook copies of The Star Child,
6 of The Star Child Poster and bookmarks!

Review + Giveaway: Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Once Burned (Night Prince, #1)
by Jeaniene Frost

Published June 26th 2012 by Avon
Mass Market Paperback, 346 pages
ISBN
006178320X (ISBN13: 9780061783203)

*Personal Purchase*

She's a mortal with dark powers...
After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person's darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude...until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world's most infamous vampire...

He's the Prince of Night...

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don't call him Dracula. Vlad's ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

Vlad, Vlad, Vlad....How I miss your humor and sex appeal.... :(

This was one of the hardest review for me to write up, becuse of my love for this series. BUT, this book did not meet my expectations and I was disappointed....

I am a HUGE fan of Jeaniene Frost and her fantastic Night Huntress Series. I love, and adore Jeaniene's writing style and love to be whisked away by her main character in the series, Bones, *little obsession*.
I also adore the secondary characters(vamps) in the series. Being that Jeaniene has branched off the original series and is giving her secondary characters their own books, I find I'm missing the main characters and the group as a whole in these secondary books.

Having been introduced previously to Vlad as one of the secondary vampire's in this series, we as readers finally get an insight to Vlad and all of his charming ways, in his own book, or so we thought!

I was so excited to read this book, I mean Vlad was funny, snarky, sexy, hmmm. if I wasn't already attached to Bones, and Ian, he would definitely be my third choice! lol
But, sadly I must say I was very disappointed in this book. Now, don't get me wrong or think I'm bashing the author, I just think this book totally missed it's mark for me, and unfortunately it is my least favorite book by Jeaniene that I've read, and I've read them all! So, on that standpoint I know what she is capable of. I wanted to be swept away by Vlad. I wanted him to exude his confidence and be engulfed in his heated flame, and not just the flame he is able to produce from his body.

In this book she doesn't show Vlad as she did in the past, instead he reminds me of being a little tight, and not as easy going as he was previously, gone is the humor, and snarkiness, gone is his "heat".
The writing felt obscured and distant. I didn't care for the main plot as Vlad meets his future love and they can hear each others thoughts, for me it didn't really work. I really didn't care for Vlad's love, Leila, as the book is mostly told from her POV. I didn't feel the connection between these two, and at times felt like giving up reading this book. I think the  main reason was because of the way so much emphasis was placed on Leila and less on Vlad. I felt no connection to Leila, as I did with past ladies in the series.

I also missed the whole "gang" I believe the reason why the Night Huntress series is so successful, is because Jeaniene is able to incorporate so many great characters and make you fall for them, but with less of a showing of the "gang" I found I missed them terribly.
Per, Jeaniene's website I read that she will continue with Vlad and Leila's story, with less emphasis placed on Bones and Cat, which really makes me sooo sad. She will also end the Night Huntress series(Bones and Cat) at book #9. I'm not sure she should be giving up on them.

I really dislike giving books low ratings, and I'm not into bashing authors. I mean it took me forever to write this review, I actually read this back in the end of July.
I just feel when/if Jeaniene continues with this series, she brings back the characters we first fell in love with and how they made us laugh and fall in love with them. I want the old gang fighting together, with maybe each book featuring each secondary character in a relationship. I really loved how she displayed that with past Night Prince books. I also want to see more of Bones and Cat.

2.5/5 Stars

Actual Quotes from this book,  I incorporated my thoughts in pink.

“People frequently bore me, sometimes amuse me, most often irritate me, but rarely intrigue me.”

This is my thoughts when thinking about, Leila

“How unconvincing. Try again.”

This is what comes to my mind when trying to think of these two as a couple

“Of course he wouldn't hesitate before trying something that had never been done before. He was Vlad Tepesh. How could he fail?”

But, fail he did :(

“Let me introduce my friend, Cat.’ The redhead, and for some reason, she looked familiar. ‘Her husband Bones’ – here Vlad smiled coolly at the short-haired brunet – ‘is not my friend.”

Aaah, there is the Vlad we all know and love....

I can give you honesty, monogamy, and more passion than you can stand, but not love. That emotion died in me long ago, as I suspect you already know.”

Yes, I did know, but along with it went your humor and snark!

Now, I want you to have a chance at reading this and tell me if my review is too harsh.
**You don't have to read the whole series to be able to read this book, can be classified as stand alone. You just won't understand how Vlad is in previous books and why sooo many *swooned* for him, in the first place...**

**Questions can be found on Rafflecopter form**

1) If you read this book, what were your thoughts?
1A) Have you read any of Jeaniene's books?
 2) Do you think my review was too harsh or just right?
3)When you have to write a less than stellar review, do you find yourself, not as confident. I know I was unsure about writing this one (Thanks for supporting me and boosting my confidence Kristin @ My Parahangover)
**In no way was Kristin an influence on my review. She just helped me feel better about me having to write a less than stellar review!** All thoughts above are 100% my own!!
4)What was the last book you read that disappointed you?

I'll giveaway one paperback copy of Once Burned plus some surprise bookmarks/swag

Red Dawn Excerpt

“I thought you’d been practicing?” Nik taunts.

“Shut it,” I growl through gritted teeth as I jump back to my feet. I can’t let him get inside my head. If I do this match will be over before it begins.

I go on the offensive as soon as my feet hit the ground. I surge forward delivering a triple kick that drives Nik backward across the mat. Outside kick, spinning back hook, roundhouse. Although he yields his position on the mat, Nik blocks them all. I drop to the mat and attempt to sweep his feet out from under him, but Nik easily dodges. He flips gracefully over my head and as I spin around, I get an elbow strike to the temple for my effort. The force of the blow causes me to bite my lip and I feel a warm trickle of blood making its way down my chin.

We go at it like this for a while. Punch, kick, block, roll, sweep, kick, dodge. It’s a vicious and brutal cycle. Seeking to end the match, I roll to the left and spring up from the mat, driving my palm into the underside of Nik’s chin. His head snaps back and I follow up with a spinning back fist. He retaliates with a kick to the back of my right knee. I crumple to the mat and just barely manage to block the fist that nearly crushes my throat as Nik descends upon me.

I’m faster and stronger, but Nik’s a more patient and skilled fighter. As Nik and I lay on the mat, arms locked, both struggling to gain the advantage, I contemplate the knife in my boot. Probably not a good idea. Pulling a weapon is likely to be considered bad sportsmanship in hand-to-hand combat. Besides, it’s only training. Nik lets out a groan and I tentatively raise my eyes to meet his.

When our eyes lock I know I’m in trouble. Big trouble. I’ve seen that smoldering look before. In my experience it precedes a smoking hot kiss. Nik’s lids are hooded and his breath is coming hard and fast as the weight of his well-muscled body presses my back into the mat. I’m trapped. My own breath catches in my throat and my grip on his forearm falters. Before I know what’s happening, I’m face down on the mat, arms bound behind my back.

“Do. You. Yield?”

“Bloody hell!” I scream, angry at myself for being a sucker. I should have seen that coming. Nik’s been known to play a little dirty when it comes to me.

“I’ll take that as a yes.” He laughs and releases me. I sit up and rub my wrist, giving Nik the dirtiest look I can muster. I doubt he even notices. He’s too busy gloating, although I’m sure he doesn’t miss the flaming embarrassment painted all over my face.

“I’m so stabbing you next time!”

“I’ll consider myself warned,” he snickers, pulling me to my feet. “Besides, I’d expect nothing less from you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I ask, tilting my head innocently.

“Just that I know how much you hate to lose.”

“You know, for a minute there I thought you were trying to compliment me on my resourcefulness,” I tease.

“Katia, if I were going to compliment you, it would be on those stunningly short shorts,” he purrs.

Before I can come up with an appropriately indignant response, he’s running his finger along the waistband of my running shorts. Okay, so maybe Nik is faster than me. But I can’t think about that right now. Actually, I can’t think about anything except the heat blazing along my skin. Nik’s finger leaves a delicious trail of fire in its wake. I should push the roving hand away, but deep down I know I don’t want it to end. I want more. A lot more.

.Promotional event/Giveaway -YA paranormal, NINE LIVES (Highland Home #5), by Shari Richardson

Today, on the blog I'm sharing a whole series with you guys, the Highland Home series(up to book #5) and one lucky winner will win all FIVE e-books!! How awesome is that? This series looks rather interesting and I'm a little jealous of the winner of the giveaway :p lol
Good Luck!
Check out all the books in the series below, and check out the excerpt!!

Much Love, Lisa  ~Silverlight

Mourning Sun

I should have known when he walked into my life that things would never be the same. Hadn't I dreamed of him and the things he'd done before I was born? If only he weren't so fascinating, so beautiful, so much more than any other guy. Maybe then I could walk away.

Mairin Cote is a magnet for weird. Her dreams come true, she can see auras and her mother is in love with an angel. Now the monsters are finding her too. Vampires, demigods and werepanthers have flocked to this small town girl who must find a way to keep her family safe, love the man of her dreams, and navigate the shark-infested waters of Highland Home High School.

Captured Sun

My first kiss was going to be my last, but it was worth it. His cool lips, his sweet taste, they were my salvation. I would never regret it, no matter what happened.

Mairin Cote thought loving a vampire was hard, but losing him to others of his kind was worse. When the death toll in East Hampton points to a rampaging vampire, the vampires and werepanthers must form an uneasy alliance to stop the destruction. To save the love of her life, Mairin must decide if living life without Mathias is worth risking an eternity with him.

Seven Days

The pain was sharp and deep, but it was nothing compared to the anguish in Xavier's eyes. I wanted to tell him I would be okay, but the words wouldn't come. The pain kept them at bay and even if I could have spoken, I knew the words would be a lie.

Kerry Cote has a pretty normal life for a teenager. Of course normal is a relative term. Her sister dates a vampire and her boyfriend turns furry once a month, but that's not the problem. It isn't until she meets the father of the man she loves that her whole existence narrows to a mere seven days.

Banished Sun

Eternity. How many times since Mathias came into my life had I considered it? Had I not taken risks that would have left us together for eternity? What I hadn't expected was to have the choice taken from us. Vampires are independent creatures and the old ones definitely don't like being bound to a human. When an ancient vampire comes to Highland Home bent on Mairin's destruction so he can free himself from his bond to her, Mathias is forced to choose between what he is and who he wishes to be.

Nine Lives

I felt a familiar ripple and knew it was too late for me. I saw her, so tiny, so perfect and I knew that I could die content. When Xavier admitted his love for me, I was complete.

Kerry Cote's story may sound familiar, but it's not. Sure there are a lot of unmarried, pregnant teenagers in the world, but how many of them know the child they carry is a miracle? How many have a vampire body guard? How many are alone because the mother of us all and the father of all vampires has a jealous daughter who covets the baby's father? Kerry must survive to bring her child into the world, for if she fails, humanity may not survive.

Excerpt from Captured Sun Book #2

Chapter 1

The alley was dark and dank. The stench of alcohol and decay overpowered the other less pleasant scent which rode the air. Death, whether it was new or ancient, had an unmistakable smell and death waited in the shadows.

The young man walked slowly. His steps wove in and out of the tumbled garbage cans and boxes behind the bars and restaurants. He whistled briefly, a nameless tune with little difference from one note to another. His glassy eyes looked into the shadows he passed, but did not see. Music thumped loudly when one of the doors on the main street opened, disgorging a raucous group of men. The young man turned to watch the others and missed the movement which brought his death.

Death reached out of the deepest shadows and pulled the young man into its embrace. The light never touched its face and the young man never made a sound. On the street, the group of men laughed and shoved each other, oblivious to the end of a life only yards away from them. When Death had finished its meal, it dropped the body and slipped deeper into the darkness. A newspaper fluttered across the alley, fetching up against the dead man's body. The headline screamed death as though to articulate the horror the man could not. The newspaper's date meant it was too late.

***

My eyes snapped open. "Dammit," I whispered.

"What was it, Mairin?" Mathias' voice slipped out of the darkness like a silken caress. I felt his arms tighten around me, but I shrugged him off.

"In a minute," I hissed. I could already hear Mom padding down the hall from her room. When the hall light flooded my room, Mathias was gone.

"Mairin?" Mom called.

"Nothing mom. Just a remnant of that movie we watched last night."

"I told you not to watch that horror crap before bed," she said, sitting on the edge of my bed. "You know it gives you nightmares."

"I know, Mom. I should know better," I laughed. "I'm OK, though. I'm going right back to sleep."

She kissed my cheek. "OK, baby. I'll see you in the morning."

Mom might always know when I dreamed, but in the last several months she had stopped pushing me so hard to tell her about every one of them. I had to remember to thank Elise when I saw her next. She'd told Mom that forcing me to share every dream was making it harder for me to deal with my premonitions. Since then, Mom asked quick questions and let me share what I wanted to without fighting me. The trouble was I had stopped sharing my dreams with her at all.

How could I tell my mom that when Mathias, the man I loved, had come into my life, I'd begun to dream of his memories? I guess that wouldn't really be so hard to explain except that Mathias' memories were of the death and destruction he'd wrought as a vampire. That wasn't something I was willing to share with Mom.

Now that I knew the monsters were real and could see them every day, I struggled with deciding how much to share with my family and how much to keep to myself. Was I saving them from the terror or putting them in danger? I didn't know and Elise wouldn't tell me what I should do. "Free will," was her favorite epithet.

Madly

Amazing!! I fell in love with this book within the first few chapters. I fell for M.Leighton's characters and storytelling abilities and consider myself a new fan!

Madly, a short novella, is a great start to this series! We get a great introduction to the characters and learn they are mermaids.
Madly, the lead female, is a princess, she attends school away from her underwater world, in our human world, alongside her best friends, Jersey, and Aidan (her intended husband).
We learn that her underwater home is in jeopardy, under lock down, and it's going to take the strength and determination of the princess, and those that are on dry land to help her, take down, and recapture, the evil Lore.
Jersey's elder brother Jackson, is Madly's childhood crush. He comes back into the princess's life, sent to protect her and assist her, as he is a Sentinel, a guard to the mer people. and the royals.
Jackson is sexy! The way he is written in this book has you drooling over him. I instantly fell for his character, and wish he would protect me. Dripping with appeal, Jackson is the kind of character I enjoy, when reading romance books. Take a look at his character picture, I found on M. Leightons site, and tell me he's not to die for! Now, that you have the picture in your mind, go read this novella, it's free right now. check at the bottom of post for link up.

5/5 Stars

Madly and Wolfhardt
A perfect continuation, from the novella, Madly. I once again was lost in M. Leighton's story, and fell even harder for her characters, especially Jackson, who is just as swoon worthy in this book as he was in the last...

In Madly and Wolfhardt, the story continues, from the novella, Madly. With the Lore having escaped imprisonment, and unleashing themselves on dry land. Wolfhardt, is the lore species that Madly has to capture, imprison, and take back to her underwater world, as she is the only person left to save her world. Madly, being a royal, has visions about whom Wolfhardt is.
Taken from the fairytale Little Red Riding hood, we learn Wolfhardt is a wolf who needs to go after "Red" but who "Red" is we can only guess?  That's where Madly's abilities takes full center stage, and her visions are clues that are needed to this puzzle. With the help of her friends, and of course Jackson, Madly rises to her full potential, and is soon on the path to capturing the Wolf.

I'm not going to spoil anymore of the whole "wolf" story for you, but what I will say is I loved the whole fairytale aspect that was part of this story. Being a fan of the TV show "Once Upon A Time" this book was a great filler for not having the show around.

Madly and Jackson's relationship is deep on so many levels. We as readers can clearly see the fireworks exploding over these two. Jackson, is smokin' hot and once again, he had me lost in thoughts over his sexiness. He's not a show off or arrogant, he protects her, and will do whatever it takes to protect the whole Mer-community.
You can clearly see he's in love with Madly, but hides his feelings for her, as well as she loves him, and does the same. Already, their love is forbidden in their world, Royals and Sentinels, protectors of their kind, don't mix. So, when feelings for one another become stronger, I wonder how they will be accepted if they wind up together?

Words, really cannot describe my feelings about this book. You know sometimes when you read a book and it captures you away, and you instantly fall for the story, but have a hard time expressing your feelings for it? Well, that is how I felt about this.
I loved it, and I think alot of it was because of the character Jackson...*swoons* I'm am so happy I decided to join this tour. I actually already ran out and bought the next book in the series, Madly and the Jackal, as the story continues, and I can't get Jackson out of my head. Hopefully, Miss Leighton will continue on with this series and will envelope me with even more adventure and Jackson.
