.Book Tour: Guest Post/Giveaway- Matt Archer Monster Hunter By Kendra C. Highley

Matt Archer: Monster Hunter (Matt Archer #1)

Release Date: 08/18/12
Paperback/e-book
299 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.

Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.

But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder.

Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.

His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

Character Interview: Mamie Archer

Today we’re interviewing Matt Archer’s sister, Mamie. A sophomore at Greenhill High School in Billings, Montana, Mamie enjoys science, math and meddling in her brother’s business. Here’s what she has to say…

Where do you dream of traveling to and why?

Oh, gosh, I hate to fly. I’d love to go to Europe someday, though. The history, the art, the quaint streets…I’d just have to travel over by cruise liner, le grande tour style.

Who is your favorite author?

Madeleine L’Engle is my favorite author, but I’ll read just about anything--including cereal boxes, The Wall Street Journal and physics text books--with equal enthusiasm.  My brothers think that’s strange, but I don’t really care.

Tell us about your family.

My mother is an attorney, and works much too hard. I love her to death, but she needs more down time. And maybe to go on a date every once in a while. My older brother, Brent, is a meat-headed football player. Oh, he has his good points, but we’re too different to get along all that well. He’s also incredibly loud. Honestly, I don’t think the Incredible Hulk could make as much noise as Brent does. Then there’s Matt, my younger brother. I’ve adored him since I was big enough to “help” Mom take care of him. He’s been acting weird lately, though. He came home from a camping trip with our Uncle Mike and he just seemed…different. Older, tougher. I know that sounds odd, but there was this look in his eyes that worried me, so I’m keeping a very close watch over him, just in case he needs my help.

What book are you reading now?

I just finished A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking. Very intelligent man. Brilliant. I’ve now moved on to The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I’ve always wanted to be a physicist or an astronomer. Maybe I’ll combine those and become an astrophysicist.

What are your favorite TV shows?

I don’t have much time for TV, but I’ll watch Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman if I happen to catch it when it’s playing.

What songs are most played on your iPod?

I love classical music. One of my favorite pieces is The Firebird by Stravinsky. I also enjoy Barber, Beethoven and Mozart.

What is your favorite meal?

I’m not picky, but…oh, this is awful…I love Pop-Tarts. I know they aren’t good for me, and I feel guilty eating them, but they’re so good! Please don’t tell my mom…

What group did you hang out with in high school?

At the risk of sounding repetitive—primarily the Physics Club, but I did branch out and join the Latin Club in ninth grade.

 Do you play any sports?

Goodness, no. I prefer to go for long walks if I need the exercise.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I don’t understand the point of that question….

Morning Person? Or Night Person? How do you know?

I’m definitely a morning person. It’s the only time of day I get to spend one-on-one time with Mom. My brothers sleep until the last possible minute, so if I get up early, I can hang out with her over breakfast.

What would we find under your bed?
Oh, nothing I hope!  I sweep underneath my bed every Tuesday. Sometimes on Fridays as well, if I think it needs it.

Tell us about your favorite restaurant.

Well, it was this lovely place downtown called Brownstone, but my brothers wrecked our chances of ever getting reservations again. I told them not to throw cake! Did they listen? No.

What makes you happy?

Knowing I’ve done something to help keep people—especially kids—safe. It’s really hard for me to hear about anyone who’s been hurt.  If I can donate to a cause, or help out as a volunteer, to provide safe places for kids to play, for example, that’s the absolute best feeling!
What one word best describes you?

Tenacious.

Do you have any special routines or rituals?

Matt would probably call it a ritual, but I prefer to wear my hair in pigtails.  Braids keep my hair neat and tidy and out of my eyes. I don’t see any reason to deviate from something that works. Fashion isn’t really that important to me. Practicality is.

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?

I have a nice singing voice. I’m too shy to sing in public, so only a few people know. My mom tried to convince me to try out for choir, but I prefer to sing in the shower. Then no one can make fun of me.

Any parting words?

Hmm…wear your seatbelt. That’s always good advice.

Thanks for joining us today, Mamie. Good luck with the SATs!

Oh, thank you so much!  I’ve been studying a bunch…hopefully I’ll do well.  Thanks for having me!
