Adam Excerpt

* * *

From the side of the room the door opened, instantaneously drawing almost everyone’s eyes to the newcomer.

My mouth dropped open.

The new arrival reached back to push his hair behind the nape of his neck and scanned the room with his magnetic gaze.

No. It couldn’t be.

There’s no such thing as magic, yet the guy from my dream the night before stood in the doorway. His face was exactly the same. His strong nose, his exquisite lips, his straight-edged brows that appeared harsh, yet empathetic. Even his eyes were the same color I’d seen in my dream, steel-gray and the shade of clouds filled with the most welcome of rains.

To my surprise, he glanced toward me and his finely-shaped lips curled into a smile. I could have sworn that my heart stopped beating. I had to force myself to breathe.

"Mr. Black," Mrs. Berry said, instantly knocking me out of my reverie as she turned her attention to the newcomer. "A pleasure to see you. Did you find your way here all right?"

"Yes ma’am," the guy named Black said. "I got lost, but I found the room finally."

"You’ll sit there, next to Adam." She pointed.

He started toward the desk beside me as the bell rang.

"But first, Mr. Black," Mrs. Berry continued, "why don’t you introduce yourself? I’m sure everyone here would like to know who you are. Wouldn’t you, class?"

A resounding chorus of grunts and ‘sures’ followed. I was only able to nod.

The new guy straightened his posture, offered a slight smile, then cleared his throat, almost as if he were nervous to be in such a large group. "Uh… hi," he said, his voice deep. "My name’s Mark Black. I’m from Houston. I moved back here with my mom and dad because my parents were originally from Trinity Springs."

"Oh! A native!" Mrs. Berry clapped so enthusiastically I thought for a moment her French tips would fly straight off. "Splendid! Absolutely remarkable, Mr. Black. Please, take a seat."

"Thank you," Mark said, bowing his head.

When he settled into his seat, he turned and smiled at me before directing his attention to the front of the room.

This couldn’t be happening. I had to be dreaming.

I pinched myself and was surprised to feel pain.

Nope. I was definitely not dreaming.

My cellphone vibrated a third, then a fourth and fifth time. I still couldn’t understand how Christy was able to get away with texting in class so often. It was a miracle she hadn’t had her phone taken away yet.

Just as I was about to reach down and turn my phone off, Mrs. Berry began to walk the rows of desks to pass the tests out. "You have the whole period," she said.

I accepted my copy of the test, passed my row’s set of papers back, then pulled my pencil from the edge of my desk and went to work.

Much of the period was spent working on the abysmally long but not overly difficult test. Having anticipated it being much harder, I found it refreshingly easy. While filling the bubbles not like the Christmas tree pattern I’d expected to use, I occasionally glanced over at Mark. Each time I looked, his gray eyes met mine.

I was unsettled, but reveled in the small sparks of pleasure I felt each time our eyes met. I’d never felt like this before. My gaze was repeatedly drawn to him, like two polar edges of magnets fighting to come together. Mark just smiled. It was almost like he could sense whenever I looked at him. My heart beat faster with the knowledge that he was at least all right with my attention. Considering the way most of the guys in the school treated me, Mark was a saint—an angel with grand sparkling wings that gleamed gold beneath the school’s fluorescent lighting.

I managed to tear my eyes away from Mark and looked up at the clock. I took note of the amount of time I had left and returned to my work. It was almost impossible to concentrate with Mark’s presence beside me. It seemed to pulse with the continuous beat of my heart. Somehow I managed to push through the test.

By the time I finished, the bell rang and the students began to rise from their seats.

"Turn your papers in here," Mrs. Berry said, patting the tray on her desk.

I rose, along with Mark, and dropped off my paper in before heading toward the door.

Once more I caught his eyes with mine and offered a slight, unsure smile. He returned it with a short nod and a grin, then was gone.

I felt breathless in his wake.

Book Tour Review/Giveaway/GuestPost: The Last Bastion Of The Living by Rhiannon Frater

The Bastion was humanity’s last hope against the fearsome undead creatures known as the Inferi Scourge. A fortified city with a high wall, surrounded by lush land rich with all the resources needed to survive, protected by high mountain summits, and a massive gate to secure the only pass into the valley, the Bastion became the last stronghold of the living on earth. But one fateful day, the gate failed and the Inferi Scourge destroyed the human settlements outside the walls and trapped the survivors inside the city. Now decades later, the last remaining humans are struggling to survive in a dying city as resources and hope dwindle.

Vanguard Maria Martinez has lived her whole life within the towering walls of steel. She yearns for a life away from the overcrowded streets, rolling blackouts, and food shortages, but there is no hope for anyone as long as the Inferi Scourge howl outside the high walls. Her only refuge from the daily grind is in the arms of her lover, Dwayne Reichardt, an officer in the Bastion Constabulary. Both are highly-decorated veterans of the last disastrous push against the Inferi Scourge. Their secret affair is her only happiness.

Then one day Maria is summoned to meet with a mysterious representative from the Science Warfare Division and is offered the opportunity to finally destroy the Inferi Scourge in the valley and close the gate. The rewards of success are great, but she will have to sacrifice everything, possibly even her life, to accomplish the ultimate goal of securing the future of humanity and saving it from extinction.

Review:

Humanities last chance for survival, lay on the shoulders of Maria Martinez. A solider and fighter in this new world, of humans(Bastion's) against zombies(Inferi Scourge). Maria is a solider who is brave enough to volunteer for a new mission to fight against the Scrourge, but this mission may turn out to be her last as she is made into a test subject, and finds herself changed, and these changes are not what she expected. After overcoming the changes, a defense team is lined up and others, like Maria are also put through changes. The war to stop the Scourge is becoming more and more critical as time goes by.

The Bastion live in the city and valley, are protected by  walls and  gates. After a gate fails to close on the outermost perimeter, the valley becomes overcome with the Scrourge. The valley, the main food source for the people living in the city is destroyed by the Scrourge, and now all of human kind is at risk of becoming extinct.
With the Bastion's main food supply in the valley now damaged and overrun by the Scrourge this mission is the last resort in overtaking the Scrourge and sealing the gate that led them into the valley. Maria and her counterparts must try to stop and kill the Scrourge and seal the gate, before all is lost.

Quote
Your the first of your kind, you're our salvation. You and the others will give humanity a chance to live and thrive again.

Rhiannon Frater has done it again. She has managed to to take a subject that I usually find boring and made me enjoy it. Military reads are definitely not on the top of my list, but after reading The Last Bastion Of The Living you cannot help but think about the sacrifices the men and woman in the military have made to protect our countries. They are the true hero's and even through the governments bull, they outshine and become humanities greatest forces. Pairing up zombies against human kind is far from new, but Rhiannon always manages to throw a monkey wrench or two in the telling of a story and make it her own, with twists and turns along the way, that will have you thinking about the story long after you have finished it.
5/5 Stars

Why I Self-Published THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING
By
Rhiannon Frater

I am a hybrid author. What does that mean? I am both self-published and traditionally published.  The AS THE WORLD DIES trilogy was published by Tor (a major NYC publishing house) and several of my novels were published by a small press called Twisted Library.  A lot of people assumed that once I landed a deal with a big publishing house I would stop self-publishing. The reality is that it’s in my best interests to self-publish and sell to major publishers for multiple reasons.
A lot of people believe that if you write a great story a publishing house will snap it up. It’s a common belief that a publishing house won’t turn down a story if it’s well-written, and that they only turn down the shoddy stuff. This isn’t actually the case. Both my agent and editor at Tor have told me that plenty of really great stories aren’t published for a variety of reasons. Most often it is because there is no market for that particular type of story, or it is too similar thematically to a book that is already being/has been published.  If the publishing house already has a novel with a werewolf/vampire love story set on the moon, then they will pass on a novel with the same concept.  If the publishing house thinks that there is no market for that type of book, again, they will take a pass.
This is what happened to THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING. Though my agent and I loved the premise and the synopsis, the story was deemed too similar to another book already coming out by the same publishing house.  Both stories are about a city surrounded by zombies and how the city is trying to wipe them out by getting creative. In only that way were the two stories similar, but it was deemed close enough. I was disappointed, but my agent encouraged me to write the book anyway.   She’s interested in growing my career with Tor, but also understands that as a full-time writer I need to consider all my options. As she has told me a few times, “I’ve sold your self-published stuff before.”
My husband (who is also my business partner) and I discussed the pros and cons of maybe submitting to a smaller press or self-publishing for a few months. We swung back and forth between the two options before settling on self-publishing.
At this point in my writing career, I have learned the ins and outs of both sides of publishing. Self-publishing THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING made sense because the royalties from its sales will supplement our monthly income. Also, we’ll retain all rights to the novel should we decide to sell it later.  We’ve already entered into an agreement for an audio book version of the novel which will be available on Audible.com, Amazon, and iTunes within a month or two.
Furthermore, I have built up a really solid publishing team with Felicia Sullivan (an editor for Permuted Press) as my primary editor, Claudia McKinney of Phat Puppy Art for the cover artwork, Kody Boye as the interior formatter and copyeditor, Ashley of the Bookish Brunette for typography on the covers, and my husband for final book cover editing.  Over the last few years, we’ve learned to produce a really solid book.
In the end I am very happy that we chose to self-publish THE LAST BASTION OF THE LIVING.  Out of all the books I’ve written, it ranks #2 as my favorite.  The process of bringing it to publication was very exciting and a lot of fun. Seeing the book slowly evolve and become a reality was an intimate experience because I had final say at every point in the process.  In the end, the book is everything I hoped it would be.
I have enjoyed my relationship with Tor immensely and look forward to the mass market paperback editions of the AS THE WORLD DIES trilogy.  I’m also thrilled to have had such a great experience with my editor at Tor and look forward to future projects. But it is also exciting that the publishing world has evolved to the point where a writer can publish a book that may not have seen the light of day otherwise and share their unique vision with their readers.

This cover was designed by Claudia from Phat Puppy Creations
and guess what, I also have an interview with the talented Claudia to share with you guys!

1) Tell me a little about yourself, and how you became an artist?

It's nice to be here and thanks for asking me. :)

I first became an artist at around the age of 39 - my daughter was preparing to sign with a major music label and needed
her pictures tweaked a bit for her Myspace page. I just "fell" into it really - and am so happy I did. Next to being a wife and mom, it's my passion in living.

2) How do you come up with design ideas for your covers? Is it a collaboration between the author and yourself, usually?
Usually the author gives me a few elements they wish to see on the cover and then I take it from there - it is definitely a team effort though to be sure.

Often times, I do have a piece in my available for cover art section at http://phatpuppyart.com that does fit their story - so it works out well.
I'm branching out now and doing some of my own photoshoots now and also working with awesome photographers who help to get exclusive and custom shots no one else has.
It's a little more money - but so worth it to have a truly exclusive work.

3) I'm not going to assume you enjoy reading, but if you do, What are you reading right now?
Unfortunately right now - I don't have any time to read. :( I'm working a LOT. However when I do read, I tend to like things in the style of John Irving. My favorite book of his was

"The World According to Garp" and "A Prayer for Owen Meany". Love his stuff!

4) How long does it take to go from an idea to the actual production of a cover?
Usually a day or two - I like to pride myself on really good turnaround time.
Wow, what an amazing turnaround!

5) Other than book covers, do you feature your artwork anywhere else?
I have had some gallery showings in Europe and here in Laguna Beach, CA. I had one piece on display at the Savoy Palace in Italy - and another, if you can believe this, an entire section of a historic Viking Ship with my work displayed.... somewhere I think in Norway. lol That was totally cool.

Anyone interested in my work can write to me at phatpuppyart@me.com
and go to my website at http://phatpuppyart.com/ to check out my "Available Cover Art" and "Discounted" sections.

I'm on Facebook too at

Thanks for the interview. I really enjoyed it!!!!

Thank You Claudia!! It was great to have you take time from your busy schedule to do a interview for my readers.
