For centuries, rumors have abounded of a lowly caste of supernatural beings known as the Terrae Angeli. Armed with the power to control Earth, Fire, Wind, and Water, these warriors secretly serve as guardians for mortals in danger. But for one young angel-in-training, Griffin, life is hell as a cruel master makes his apprenticeship a nightmare. On the verge of failing, a new mentor, Basil, enters his life and changes it forever.Taking on the identity of father and son, Griffin and Basil forge a special bond where honesty and trust go hand in hand to secure Griffin's destiny as a Terrae Angeli. Griffin's belief in himself and the love of a mortal girl are the perfect combination in overcoming the darkest days of his life. But will it be enough for him to succeed? For Griffin, it's time to angel up
“Okay, I got to try this thing,” said Katie and clambered aboard the enormous tire swing. As it tilted, she gestured to him. “Get on the other side. That way, we’ll balance it.”
Grabbing the chains as high as he could reach, Griffin hoisted himself up and over the rim, his legs dangling inside. “Let me get it started,” he said. “Hang on.” Twisting forward, he stretched out a leg, the toe of his athletic shoe brushing the ground. He gave a quick push and the swing began spinning. After a few more kicks, momentum took over. Hopping back on, Griffin pressed his knees against Katie’s, his stomach tingling from the twirling motion. He watched as Katie clasped the chains tightly, then tipped back as far as she could, her hair streaming behind her.
As it slowed down, he kicked again, and this time joined her, leaning out with his eyes shut. Hooking his feet inside the tire rim on either side of her knees, Griffin let go and stretched back, arms spread wide.
Flying.
“Hey, be careful!”
“No, it’s okay. Just hook your feet inside the rim. Then let go of the chains. It’s awesome!”
As she adjusted her seat, he gave the swing an extra hard spin and titled back again. He laughed for no reason.
Which is always the best reason.
As it slowed and then stopped, they both sat up. Grinning, they hopped down inside at the same time. For a long minute, they gazed at each other. Then bracing his hands on either side of the tire, Griffin leaned forward and half-closed his eyes.
And kissed Katie.
Unsure what to do next, he peeked through slitted eyelids. Spying hers tightly closed, he shut his again. After a few minutes, they both drew back, each taking a deep breath.
“I wouldn’t mind trying that again,” he whispered, “and I don’t mean the swing.”
Katie laughed nervously, tucking her hair behind one ear, then glanced around the park, checking for spectators. “Okay, I guess,” she murmured, then lifted her face and closed her eyes.
They kissed until the shadows chased them home.
Griffin’s Journal: Thursday, September 26th
I kissed Katie today.
What was even better: she kissed me back.

Thanks for sharing this, it sounds like a great fantasy.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet excerpt! I'm always sold on the kissing scenes. I also love tire swings! My grandpa hung one up for me as I kid and I could spend hours on it! Thanks for sharing! Sounds like an interesting read with a great romance!
ReplyDeleteThis story sounds so good! I love the idea of paranormal romance where the warriors are learning how to control the elements. I especially like that one of the guardians falls in love with a mortal woman.
ReplyDeleteDarby seems like a sweetheart. I look forward to her Finn Finnegan, too.
