Book Spotlight/Excerpt: A Dark Corner by J.A. Psoras

Eric wants to be normal. But hiding in dark corners as a shifter doesn't make it easy.

Drawn by a vision, Eric goes to the Big City to find his destiny. Alluring Carly is all he's ever wanted in a girl. But Janis, her conniving "besty," always manages to intercept. All of Carly's circle, a group of fast-paced rock n' rollers, are changing. Each corrupted by the seductive front man of burgeoning rock group, "Myth. " Seth's mysterious. Irresistible to women. A dangerous guy with his own secrets and a very dark agenda. His sinister plans include Eric and Carly as she grapples between an unnatural fixation with Seth and a secret attraction to Eric.

Fixated on raising hell, Seth hasn't counted on one detail: if Eric and Carly (who's about to discover her own supernatural twist) ever do get together, they just might be more than he can handle.

Excerpt
Not too far away, Seth was also preparing. Alone in his room, the door locked, he sat at a desk facing a mirror. He reached for his Zippo lighter and lit a tall, red candle. Applying a layer of dark eyeliner, he intently starred at himself.
At first, his mouth open, a vacancy in his unrelenting glare –as if something deep within, his soul, was disconnecting. Then a wide grin spread its wings across his mouth, awakening an intensifying flicker in his eyes.
After removing his shirt, he opened a drawer and retrieved a small tube of black pant. Slowly, he applied five dotes on his face in careful, solemn strokes. One on his forehead, two besides both ears and two dotes on either sides of his chin. He stood then and placed the candle in the center of a circle formed along the hardwood floor. The circle, composed of animal bones, herbs and small stones, was just wide enough to accommodate him.
Seth sat with his legs crossed in front of him. He closed his eyes and began breathing deeply, raising his arms into the air above his head.
“Lord of shadows, the true king, keeper of netherworld, I call to you,” he chanted several times.
Seth lifted a dagger and pointed it towards the north, south, east and then the west.
“Accept this sacrifice of flesh so that you may know me worthy.”
He slid the dagger across his forearm, spilling drops of blood in a circular motion around the candle.
“Please fill me with your power. Enter me, master, I, your servant, request…”
He sat still, watching for a sign. Over and over, he chanted, “Fill me with your power. Enter me, master.”
Suddenly, the gentle glow of the candle changed. The flame shot upwards at least a foot turning into a streaming torch.
Seth’s eyes widened.
“Yes! Enter me now!”
The smoke bellowed throughout the small room. Seth lowered his arms, placing his palms down on his knees. Soon the smoke gathered and circled like a miniature dust storm sucking small particles into the air. He became engulfed in the smolder as papers rustled and blew around. The wine–colored drapes flapped. Tattered posters on the walls fluttered like autumn leaves shaking on a branch.
From beyond the walls of the dwelling, a distant cry grew closer and closer. A roaring growl sounded. The eyes of the tattooed dragon on his back opened, revealing blazed crimson orbs. The thick fog circled ferociously. It wormed its way towards Seth’s back and connected with a quick swoosh, extinguishing the flame.
Seth moaned in agony, grinning ever still. The scent of sulfur filled the room as if a gigantic match had snuffed out and everything fell to a rest. From the ceiling, a slow, pulsating light –stark white– flashed in strobes. Everything in the room, the blankets, scattered clothing, empty bottles, everything, turned utterly devoid of color. Seth, too, was a blank canvas. His hair, normally jet black, like the snowy mane of a Camarillo horse. His lips, his skin –as if coated in titanium paint.
He kept his eyes closed for a moment. Patiently, he waited.
An electrical buzzing hummed throughout. As if newly born, slowly, his eyes opened. First a thin crescent of illuminated black blazed from beneath his lids. Then there was an inverted half–moon. Finally, his unearthly eyes fully opened…two fiery onyx discs contrasted against absolute starkness.
–The summons was complete. He wanted to test it.
Seth released a demonstration of his newfound power. Several squawking ravens appeared to fly from his center. The harried birds vanished as they collided into the walls, the windowless room unable to contain them. A single feather drifted down like a swaying pendulum.
Absolutely delighted, Seth howled.
A harsh knocking at the door disrupted the final moments of the ritual. Instantaneously, Seth reappeared as himself. The room, back to normal.
Seth’s grin bent.
From behind the closed door, Mike called out, “What the hell is going on in there?”
What the hell, Seth thought. It perversely amused him.
“What the hell, indeed,” Seth said beneath his breath, his voice changed –deep and throaty.
“Seth?” Mike called again.
“I’ll be out momentarily, Mikey,” Seth said, loud enough for Mike to hear.
Then he turned his head with a sudden snap and shouted, “Now get the fuck away from my door!”
Although he appeared normal again, his fate irrevocably changed. True, he used the dark powers many times with increasing stakes. But this time, he sealed himself. Forever. In a way, he was only betrothed before that. Now, he was married to hell in an unbreakable covenant written in his own blood. Chained and shackled in the darkest corner of netherworld, though empowered with much of its dark force.
His soul was damned.
His providence was sealed.
And he couldn’t think of a better way to spend eternity.

I am so honored to be part of the Authors Are Rockstars Tour, hosted by Fiktshun and Two Chicks On A Book! They have done an amazing job, and I look forward to visiting as many "Rockstar" Post as I can -Full List HERE.
There will be fantastic giveaways and alot of fun post, so go check out the list and find "Rockstar Authors"

My Rockstar post is a Character Interview w/ the two main characters in Susan Dennard's Debut Something Strange And Deadly.
If you haven't read it yet, I strongly recommend you do. I adored this book! The world building was spectacular, the characters were enjoyable, and the gadgets used in the book were a fun addition. Want to see my full review? GO HERE. Susan is a rockstar because she made me enjoy the history of the Victorian times. I can't wait for more exciting reads from her!

Something Strange and Deadly (Something Strange and Deadly #1)

Susan Dennard is a reader, writer, lover of animals, and eater of cookies.

She is a writer turned marine biologist turned writer again. Among the traits she shares with her heroine Eleanor are a weakness for Shakespeare quotes, a healthy appetite for baked goods, and an insatiable curiosity. Sadly, Susan does not get to wear a corset or wave a parasol on a daily basis.
She lives in Germany with her French husband and Irish setter, and you can learn more about her crazy thoughts and crippling cookie-addiction on her blog, twitter, facebook, or Goodreads.
Something Strange and Deadly is her debut novel.

Now, here are the two main characters Eleanor Fitt and Daniel Sherridan, watch out though, they are both two stubborn, hotheaded at times, and all around lovely characters!

Enjoy!!! I know I did!!

Name: Eleanor Abigail Fitt
Age: 16
Position: Young Lady of High Society
Weapon of Choice: Parasol
Favorite Book: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
Strengths: Brave, Clever
Weaknesses: Curiosity, Impulsiveness

Name: Daniel Patrick Sheridan
Age: 19

Position: Inventor for the Spirit-Hunters
Favorite Activity: Experimenting with new inventions
Favorite Food: Peach pie
Favorite Book: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Strengths: Resourceful, loyal
Weaknesses: Short-tempered, secretive

1) Eleanor your relationship with Daniel seems to be hot/cold at times, what are your thoughts about each other?
Eleanor: He's a scalawag with far too much charm for his own good… Or for my own good. If only he could learn some blasted manners, though. Although...no--forget I mentioned manners. If Daniel were to turn like every other gentleman on the planet, I don't think I'd like him at all. I suppose most of his charm is how open and uncultured he is.
Daniel: I'm not sure if I should be flattered or not.
Eleanor: Flattered, of course.
Daniel: Huh. Well, you, Empress Eleanor, have the curiosity of cat and common sense of a goldfish. But...I gotta say, you've also got grit. I ain't met any other girl as fearless as you.

2) Daniel, you have created some amazing, original, gadgets, explain to my readers where your inspiration comes from, and if we will see more of these gadgets in future books?
'Course I will! I'm an inventor. It's not like I'd just stop inventin'. I reckon those pulse bombs could be made a bit more portable, and there's gotta be some way to latch onto the electricity in quartz...

3) Eleanor, at such a young age, you come across as strong willed and determined, how does it feel growing up in this era, where girls are supposed to act and dress a certain way?
Am I strong-willed? Mama just calls it stubborn--or crass. I cannot say I ever gave much thought to how I behaved, though I did try to please Mama and act as ladylike as I could in social situations. Unfortunately, "as ladylike as I could" was never quite simpering or timid enough for Philadelphia's standards.
I daresay, I like the way the Spirit-Hunters live--especially Jie. They don't care what people think of them, and I think that's a wonderful way to be.

4)  As your adventure continues in the next book, tell me a hint of what we can expect, will we see a lot more of the Walking Dead, more action and will we see some passion between you two?
Eleanor: There are some Dead to come, but mostly the Spirit-Hunters are faced with an entirely different sort of undead creature in A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY. And I'm faced with...well, with coming to terms with my own necromancy. It is not an easy road ahead of me.
Daniel: Will you see some passion? Ha! Everything Empress Eleanor does is filled with passion. She's about as hot-headed as they come--
Eleanor: Pshaw. You're one to talk. Make up your mind, please. Are you in love with me or not? And once you know--
Daniel: Once I know?! Oh, that's rich, comin' from the gal who's constantly keeping secrets. If anyone can't make up their mind here, it's you.
Eleanor: I will not even deign to respond to that, Daniel Sheridan.

5) Wait, I believe I heard the walking dead alarm, sound, umm. *help*!  Refresh my memory and tell me how I fight these, vile creatures!
Eleanor: Oh, that's easy--it was the first lesson I learned from Jie. As long as they Dead are controlled by a necromancer, you simply break their knees. If you have a large stick--or parasol handy--then don't forget lesson number one: aim for the knees!

Daniel: But that only works when the Dead are slow. When you're faced with the Hungry Dead, you're gonna need to destroy the corpse completely. That's where a bit of dynamite can really come in handy...

6) One last question, before you guys, have to run off.
Let's say this book is turned into a movie, who would be your dream cast?
Eleanor: I think Rachel Hurd-Wood would play me quite spectacularly. And Max Irons would be a lovely Daniel.

Daniel: Huh. I guess he could play me--as long as he has a cap like mine. But I'm better lookin'.

Eleanor: Of course you are, Daniel. As for Jie, I think Jessica Lu would play her quite well.

Daniel: And I reckon that Anthony Mackie fellow would make a good Joseph.

Thank You very much, Eleanor, Daniel and Susan.
I also would like to thank Rachel @Fiktsun and Jaime and Patricia @ Two Chicks On Books

Review-

First I just want to give a little shout out to Giselle from Xpresso Reads, for reminding me this book was coming out thru her Fresh Batch Saturday Weekly Post. If your anything like me, you totally forget what new books are coming out each week. Well, since I've been visiting her post, every week (stalker) I know now the best books that are coming out for the following week! Thanks Giselle, for taking the time to post my favorite meme of the week! :)

O.K. onto the review!

Wicked Nights was the first book by Gena that I've read, having yet to start her popular LOTU world series, I know, I'm probably missing out on some hot warriors because we get a slight appearance by some of them in this book, and they sound interesting!
Even though this book is a spin-off of the LOTU series, it can be read without reading the LOTU series.

Right from the start, this book grabbed me and I was hooked!

Annabelle goes thru a horrific crime, lucky to have her life intact, but not really so lucky as to be blamed for the crime! I really felt bad for Anna, right from the start and wondered how she was going to get out of the mess she got into.
Anna is deemed insane and has to live in a hospital for the criminally insane. She is abused, sexually and mentally, and is visited by otherworldly demonic creatures, who also torture her. These creatures can only be seen by her and not by the any other human. Annabelle does her best to fight them off and succeeds most of the time but, new creatures keep springing up, until one day Annabelle sees  something different, an angel has come to her room as well as a demonic creature. This angel and his army has come to rid the area of these creatures. Curious as to how and why this human can see these creatures as well as himself, he becomes her savior of sorts and whisks her away from her tortures state.

Zacharel, angel and leader of an army of angels, is sent out on missions to protect humans. Although, they do take out human casualties, once in awhile they are"good" angels, that have a "bad boy" appeal to them, which makes them yummy!
Strong, powerful, protective, and sexy -sign me up!
Zacharel, is a virgin, which is a little weird, at first, considering he's "ancient", and he has a hard time dealing with his feelings at first when it comes to Anna, but slowly he starts to care for her, even though she is "marked" by a demon. When your "marked' by a demon you are basically theirs, a sort of partner. Anna never agreed, to being this demon's other half, she doesn't understand why, this all happened to her, but the reason why is a big part of the story, and actually shows that this demon has been planning a long time to get to Zacharel. Now, I don't want to give the whole story away, so I'll just say this book was pretty darn good as far as an Angel book, it didn't have a ton of action in it, nor did it have a ton of romance, but it did have a good mystery, to it. One of those mysteries, that you will look back at the beginning and say "Oh, that's why this happened".

Although this book had highs and lows for me, I would of loved more action(cuz, I'm an action girl)
I really enjoyed the ending the most and will continue on with this series. The next book will feature the angel Koldo, who I found very appealing...

Waiting On Wednesday #5

Hosted by Jill @ Breaking The Spine
Expected publication: February 5th 2013 by Little Brown and Company
YA, Steampunk

It's one thing to learn to curtsy properly. It's quite another to learn to curtsy and throw a knife at the same time. Welcome to finishing school.

Fourteen-year-old Sophronia is the bane of her mother's existence. Sophronia is more interested in dismantling clocks and climbing trees than proper etiquette at tea--and god forbid anyone see her atrocious curtsy. Mrs. Temminnick is desperate for her daughter to become a proper lady. She enrolls Sophronia in Mademoiselle Geraldine's Finishing Academy for Young Ladies of Quality.

But little do Sophronia or her mother know that this is a school where ingenious young girls learn to finish, all right--but it's a different kind of finishing. Mademoiselle Geraldine's certainly trains young ladies in the finer arts of dance, dress, and etiquette, but also in the other kinds of finishing: the fine arts of death, diversion, deceit, espionage, and the modern weaponries. Sophronia and her friends are going to have a rousing first year at school.

First in a four book YA series set 25 years before the Parasol Protectorate but in the same universe.

Soulless (Parasol Protector...So, guys check out that super cool cover, the scissors!!! If you haven't heard of Gail Carriger, she is the NY Times Bestselling Author of The Parasol Protectrate Series, which I own a few of the books, but have yet to start this series. This one sounds really good and I can't wait for this one, since I've been enjoying steampunk lately, maybe this one will be another great read!
