Hello Anna, Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to stop by my blog, today!  

What can we expect to see in the final installment of The Eve Trilogy?
 
 
 
 
 

It’s hard to say anything without giving something away, but the third book in the series is the most panic inducing.  Eve makes another life-altering discovery and feels the repercussions of that throughout the story. She loses several people she’s close to and is more alone than she’s ever been.  

 Eve’s a very strong heroine, where did your inspiration come from when writing about her?
 
 
 
 

I wanted to write a character who was incredibly sheltered, had no survival skills, and believed everything she’d been taught. I wanted to challenge her beliefs and push her to her limits. When Eve goes beyond the compound walls she’s convinced she’ll die. Watching her change and grow was the most enjoyable part of the writing process. She becomes stronger than she (or I) ever thought possible. 

When writing about the New America, where did you draw your inspiration from? 
 
 
  

Everywhere. There are a lot of isolated hikes in Southern California (where I currently live) and I’ve imagined what it would be like to be attacked by a bear. That scene came straight from my own (semi-irrational) fears. Other scenes were born out of wondering what the world would look like without us in it. I love the idea that ugly strip malls might eventually be swallowed by nature, covered over with ivy and moss. 

What projects are you currently working on? 
 
 

I’m working on a new two-book YA series called Blackbird. It’s a bit of a mystery. More details soon…   

If the Eve trilogy were to be made into a movie, what actors would play your characters? 

I’m currently watching Vampire Diaries and I’m obsessed with everyone on that show. When I answered my first fantasy casting questions I’d seen pictures of Paul Wesley, and thought he was a good dark brooding type, possibly someone who would play Leif. After watching the show, he is definitely a Caleb. Definitely.

I’ve always thought Ashley Greene from Twilight would be a great Arden, and Rooney Mara (or someone like her) would be a great Eve.

Anna Carey has been a gift wrapper, face painter, nanny, horrific cocktail waitress, sofa saleswoman and children's book editor. She graduated from New York University and has an MFA in fiction from Brooklyn College. She currently lives in Los Angeles, where she can be found writing, reading, and doodling on the giant chalkboard in her kitchen.

Interview with Allie Larkin 

Timeline of Allie Larkin’s Life

 

 

Q: n the timeline of your life on your website, you mention you think the idea of love at first sight is flawed, but in reality it happened to you. If you could convey what this feels like in real life in just 1-3 sentences, how would you describe it? 

 

AL: The first time I saw my husband, I thought, “He’s important.” It was a very clear thought, and I wasn’t exactly sure what it meant at the time, but he turned out to be the most important. 

 

 

Q: You also mention that a high school teacher wasn’t a fan of your writing when you were a student. However, a college teacher was encouraging. How do you think you ‘grew’ between the first teacher and the second or was Mrs. X just wrong along and really can “suck it”? ;) 

 

AL: Mrs. X can totally suck it.  ;)  Actually, I remember doing very well on a creative writing assignment in her class.  It was all the other class work that was problematic, and the struggle left me a bit disenchanted with school in general.  I had undiagnosed ADD, which is something I studied and learned to work with in college after being diagnosed.  I did have a number of wonderful teachers in high school who were encouraging.  I just, unfortunately, spent a lot of time as a square peg in a round hole, and one of the places I really didn’t fit was that English class.   

 

 

Q: You mention you were in a writing group before your first book was published. What did the group teach you or offer you the most on the road to publication? 

 

AL: My writing group, in all its incarnations, gave me deadlines, constructive criticism, support, friendship—basically everything anyone needs to become a writer.  They are immensely talented people. Having that kind of sounding board, and watching other people’s work develop over time is a priceless thing.  It takes time to find such a special group of people, and I treasure mine. 

 

 

Q: Advice to aspiring writers: What is something you know now that you wish younger Allie knew ‘back then’? 

 

AL: You know, I’ve actually thought about that often. If only I could go back and tell the teenage me not to worry because Mrs. X was wrong… If I could tell my nervous, unpublished self that I’d get there… And I’ve realized that if I could, I wouldn’t.  Because I think the struggle is a part of the process.  It shapes who you are, and it makes the success that much more meaningful.  So I think the best advice I have to give is that it’s okay to struggle, to fail, to hurt, to feel like you want to quit. Use it to your advantage. Make it for something. 

 

 

Q: What has been the best advice given to you so far in life? Writerly or in general. 

 

AL: The best writerly advice I’ve been given is to read your work aloud. When I get to the last draft of a book, I’m likely to lose my voice, because I read all of it to myself over the course of a day or two. I think the rhythm of fiction is very important.  You catch things you wouldn’t otherwise.

You’ve written about a variety of paranormal creatures, including vampires, werewolves, and mermaids, all of whom appear in your latest book, Undead and Underwater. Do you have a favorite supernatural species to write about? 

 

Ah, heck, I love ‘em all.  I really do.  I like taking ordinary people and plunging them into absurd crazy dangerous situations, and the paranormal offers an endless variety of ways to screw with my characters.  Whether it’s witches or vampires or grouchy mermaids or torqued-off leprechauns, it’s always a good time. 

 

How do your werewolves, vampires, and mermaids line up with or contradict the traditional myths? 

 

I love messing with the traditional myths!  I like turning them on their head.  Instead of a grim vampire who skulks in dark alleys, Betsy the vampire is a sunny blonde unemployed office assistant with a serious jones for designer shoes, and a serious dislike of the conventional vampire “rules”.  My mermaid, Fred, is dour, anti-social, can’t swim, is allergic to shellfish, and hates the feel of seaweed.  Nor can she sing like Ariel, and would never make a deal with a sea witch just to land a landlubber.  Like that. 

 

Can you describe some of their distinct cultural practices or etiquette? 

 

I cannot, because etiquette would imply they have some.  And... they do not.  Most of my characters stand out because they buck social conventions.  Or they’re just immature and rude.  Either way: not so much with the etiquette. 

 

Have you always written in the paranormal genre? What was the first story you ever wrote? (not necessarily the first story you published) 

 

I’ve written in several genres—young adult, non-fiction, fantasy, romantic suspense...like my reading taste, my writing taste is all over the place.  I don’t think I could ever write in just one genre.  The first story I ever wrote was at age 13, about a teenage girl kidnapped by the government because they wanted to exploit her telekinetic powers.  That was my version of your typical girl-meets-boy story.  Girl meets government thugs? 

 

Ok, last question: If you were a paranormal, what type would you be? 

 

A sasquatch.  A big hairy creature lumbering through the forest, contentedly grazing and occasionally kicking ass.  That’s the life for me!
