Review

Rae Kerrigan a 15 year old girl who lost both her parents in a fire, and lives with her Uncle. One day she is told she has to go to a private school in a foreign country. Rae is confused as to why she must go to a school so far away from home.
Rae finds out she is in a school for gifted kids.
At the age of 16 these gifted individuals receive a Tatu. A Tatu that magically appears on lower backs of girls or arms of boys. This Tatu is a sign of what powers they will acquire. Rae has to wait awhile before this Tatu reveals itself on her back. Already many kids at the school have acquired their Tatu and everyone loves to show off their ink and what their powers mean.
Meanwhile rumors are swelling as to what powers Rae will have. Already, Rae is unique, coming from two parents who carried a Tatu, which is unheard of, and throw in the fact that her father was powerful ,and chose the dark side, of using his Tatu.  Rae wonders what her gift will be. When the day finally arrives she sees a unique tatu on her back and begins to learn more, and more about her special powers.
Will Rae become her father's daughter, and become a monster like him or will she learn that,
The sins of the father are not always the sins of the daughter....

This book reminded me of Harry Potter and all I kept thinking about was picking out the similarities between the two books. Although, that changed pretty quickly. The author really did a fine job sucking me into her world and since this book had an aire of mystery to it,  I was  curious about what powers Rae would acquire, and how she would use them.
It was cute and HP fans will enjoy the social banter of the forming friendship Rae forms at the school. Throw in some boys, and some fun friends, oh and let's not forget about the jealous, mean girl and you have a recipe for a fun, light read.
Young adults will enjoy this book as well as adults. 4/5 stars

PROLOGUE

A sharp, searing pain pierced through my chest as I watched the guy I liked—the guy I was falling in love with—kiss another girl. With every fiber of my being, I willed myself to look away, my vision blurring in a desperate attempt to escape the agonizing scene before me. My body failed to obey; my gaze remained firmly glued to the couple.
Powerless, I surrendered to the nightmare, for a brief moment allowing myself to imagine that his muscular arms were, in fact, embracing me. After all, the girl’s face, with its pale complexion, high cheekbones, straight nose and cupid-bow lips, was identical to mine. Her glossy brown hair cascaded down her back, each loose wave perfectly matching my own. Even her slender body curved in precisely the same places. Looking at her was like gazing into the smooth, reflective surface of a moving, breathing mirror.
She was me.
Or was I her?
She fluttered open her long, dark lashes, and pulling me out of the fantasy, revealed the one perceptible difference between us: her emerald green eyes. While hauntingly beautiful, they looked nothing at all like my pale violet ones. She stared directly at me, tightening her grip on the only person in the world I had ever wanted to be with—mocking me for being too late.
Aurora,” he whispered in her ear.
In that instant, I knew with certainty that he was not thinking about me...
